19 Jan Radicalization and Deradicalization: Comparing Experiences – Germany, Indonesia, and Beyond
On 24-26 November 2015 the German Embassy Jakarta in collaboration with the Paramadina Foundation, the Goethe-Institut and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation hosted a workshop entitled “Radicalization and De-radicalization: Comparing Experiences – Germany, Indonesia, and Beyond”.
The purpose of the workshop was to share knowledge and experiences in preventing radicalization and promoting de-radicalization, especially of young people, through an inclusive approach including not only governments but also non-governmental organizations, educators, social workers, preachers, family and friends.
The workshop was part of the “German Season” running from September to December 2015 during which the German Embassy Jakarta in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut and various Indonesian partners hosted a series of events in the fields of culture, science, business and politics.
The conference brought together 60 people including representatives from government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society as well as researchers, educators and journalists. Keynote speakers from Indonesia and Germany gave introductory speeches at the beginning and reflected on the outcomes at the close of the workshop. During the workshop, participants were assigned to four working groups, each chaired by a moderator from Indonesia and Germany.
